![]() ![]() Men can dare, “with boldness and without condemnation” to call upon the “heavenly God” with the name of “Father” only when they are made worthy to do so by Christ (cf. ![]() This name of “Father” for God is given by Christ, the divine Son of God. The Old Testament people did not address God as “Abba: Father” (Rom 8.15, Gal 4.6). ![]() It begins with a petition to God as “our Father.” There was no such prayer before this teaching of Christ. This is the usual translation of the prayer used in the Orthodox Church. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil (Mt 6.9–13, cf. Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
